Hiking

Hatcher Pass and the Willow Creek Mining District are day trips close to Anchorage. Mining ruins dot the landscape. Climb any of a dozen summits, and find the relics of a bygone mining era. Old bits and pieces are strewn about, as the weather and avalanches take the hard work of the old timers and slowly tear it down. Pan for gold, or just take in the scenery. The Independence Mine State Park has preserved a portion of the District, but the greater portion is slowly being scattered to the bottom. Cost $150 per person per day from Willow.

You and Your Gear

Expect bad weather, and hope for the best! You will need suitable clothing for wilderness conditions. Lightweight cotton and jeans are not suitable for travel in the Alaskan wilderness. Modern fabrics are lightweight and dry quickly. Fleece and wool work well for bad weather. Top quality raingear and breathable chest waders are essential for comfort in the Alaskan bush. Hip boots are not suitable for bad weather and rafting. A pair of tennies or camp shoes or a good pair of boots are nice to have along. A pocket knife or leatherman is necessary. A camera and binoculars will enhance your experience. Bug repellent and a head net are required for travel in the Alaskan bush. Bring your favorite rods and tackle. The next secret weapon is in your flybox. Ask me for details of fishing tackle and equipment. Bring our favorite alcoholic beverages. Limit your gear to approximately 60#, and pack in a waterproof float bag. I will supply waterproof float bags. A trip specific gear list available upon request.

Due to the varied nature of the trips offered, your lodging needs are to be determined. Although I will help you find the correct lodging for your trip, all lodging costs are not included in quoted rates.
